Northwest City-County

The attractions listed below all have some type of historical and/or educational character:

Crystal Cave:  English-born Alfred Mann was the first owner who grew mushrooms and celery in the cave which has been commercially open to the public since 1893.  Human remains and other tools and debris dating back to 1000-1200 A.D. have been found in the cavern.  (417) 833-9599.  The cave is located north of Springfield.

Gilmore Octagonal Barn: Owners Wilma & Mike McGilvry own what is probably the earliest polygonal barn in Missouri dating back to about 1880.  This is the largest stone barn in the state. It is located on Hwy. 160 between Willard and Ash Grove.  From the west side of Springfield, take the West Bypass (Hwy. 160) north.  Cross over I-44 and continue through Willard.  The barn is located about 4-5 miles beyond Willard on the north side of the highway.  Private tours are available.  (417) 751-2552.

Ozark Afro-American Heritage Museum website and more photos . . .  Opened in October `02, Father Moses Berry created the OAAHM to provide visitors with an opportunity to honor Afro-American ancestors.  Some of the artifacts on display include paintings, clothing, photographs, antiques, and the shackles actually once worn by Father Berry’s great grandfather.  This non-profit museum is located on Main Street in Ash Grove northwest of Springfield, about a 20-minute drive. From the west side of Springfield, take the West Bypass (Hwy. 160) to the north.  Pass over I-44 and continue through the town of Willard to Ash Grove, Missouri.  In Ash Grove at the intersection of Hwy. 160 and F (signal light), turn left.  Continue to Main Street.  Turn left at Main and park.  The museum is on the south side of Main.  For more information call: 672-3104 and 751-9753.  Or, by e-mail:  magberry@att.net .

Andy Dalton Shooting Range & Outdoor Education Center, Bois D'Arc, MO.

Fantastic Caverns: This 50-minute tour is great for parents with children and elderly guests because the whole adventure is on a Jeep-drawn tram – no walking.  The cave stays a warm 60 degrees Fahrenheit year round and offers insight into this exclusive underground world.  Fantastic Caverns presents an opportunity for children in a private educational sessions for an extra fee.  Group tours are also available.  For more information call (417) 833-2010.
