Southwest City-County

The attractions listed below all have some type of historical and/or educational character: 

Wilson Creek National Battlefield:  Historians have been known to argue that the battle on August 10, 1861 in southwest Missouri was the most important of all the Civil War battles west of the Mississippi River.  The United States Congress named this a 1,200-acre National Park, a unit of the National Park Service.  It is located west of Battlefield, Missouri.  Travel west on Republic Road, beyond FF to ZZ, left onto ZZ and to the Battlefield.  (417) 732-2662.

Nathanael Greene Park, The Master Gardener's Demonstration Garden, Close Park & The Gray-Campbell Farmstead

The next grouping offers a more outdoors approach to experiencing southwest Missouri through the open air and a bit more active manner:

Nathaniel Greene Park, The Master Gardener's Demonstration Garden, Close Memorial Park, The Gray-Campbell Farmstead, and The Japanese Stroll Garden:  This outdoor extravaganza provides over 200 varieties of plants, picnic areas, grills, restroom facilities, a playground, lake, and lots of room to walk around and experience nature.  For more information call (417) 864-1049.

Ozark Greenways Rural Bike Tours:  Ozark Greenways offers a number of different bike trails throughout the county.  (417) 864-2014 or 2015.

Chesterfield Family Center:  Located on the south side of town off Republic Road, Chesterfield Family Center offers something for everyone in the family.  There are cardio workout rooms with elliptical machines, treadmills, stationary bikes, and more.  Downstairs has a dual weight room and studio for different classes.  The kids can enjoy open gym playing basketball and volleyball or tackle the climbing wall under the staff’s supervision.  A pool with slide, lanes, and resistance area, hot tub, indoor and outdoor walking tracks, outdoor playground, and child care are just some of the other amenities offered.  More photos!

Horton Smith Golf Course:  This public 18-hole golf course (70 par) offers a driving range, golf lessons, practice green, club rentals, dress code, packages, and group rate opportunities.  The course is open daily except Christmas Day. For more information call (417) 891-1639.

The Springfield Palace Movie Theatre Website and Photo of the Outside . . . offers slightly outdated movies at a discounted rate.  Make sure to call ahead for show times and locations.  (417) 875-6200.

The Springfield-Greene County Library Center Website & Outside Photo . . . :  This 82,000 square foot facility has computer labs, meeting rooms, a 185-seat auditorium, outdoor story garden, state-of-the-art technology, gift shop, and small café.  The library is open Monday-Saturday, 8:30 am-9 pm and Sunday, 1-5 pm.  For more information call (417) 874-8110.
