The
Recreation and Leisure Studies (RLS) program at Missouri State University has been involved in outdoor
recreation and education since 1968. The program has a long
history of providing students access to training in outdoor
recreation. Springfield is mid-America’s ideal location for
outdoor pursuits, in the Ozarks Plateau Region of Missouri.
This area has premier outdoor recreation opportunities all
within a 2-hour drive. The Ozark National River, Buffalo
National River, Mark Twain National Forest, the Ozark Trail, the Ozark
Highland Trail, White River, Busieck State Forest, and Sam’s
Throne are just a few of the outdoor areas close to campus.
RLS
is currently “rebuilding” its Outdoor Recreation degree to meet the needs of
students and the employers of the 21 Century. The program will
be shifting its emphasis to training outdoor students to be
outdoor leaders with more hands-on skills in the technical and
processing aspects of outdoor pursuits while allowing them some
autonomy for specialization. Students that graduate from the
Outdoor degree option will have a wide range of
experience and skills. The RLS program at Missouri State
University is dedicated to
providing the best overall education to our students.
